Hyslop announces funding for museums and galleries in 2012-13
he Scottish Government has announced a boost of more than £1 million for Scottish museums and galleries.
Project funding of £970,000 and £100,000 capital funding has been allocated from the draft budget for 2012-13, says culture secretary Fiona Hyslop.
More than 260 museums and galleries are eligible to apply for the funding, which will be administered by Museums Galleries Scotland on the Scottish Government's behalf.
Ms Hyslop said:
" Despite deep cuts in public finances imposed by the UK Government, I have prioritised my budget to minimise as far as possible the impact on our cultural and heritage sector. I am continuing to invest in our museums and galleries in 2012, the Year of Creative Scotland. The sector will undergo a transformation during this landmark year with the launch of the new National Strategy and National Development Body."
Joanne Orr, Chief Executive Officer of Museums Galleries Scotland, said:
"We welcome this announcement by the Scottish Government. To receive this commitment in the current challenging economic climate is a real endorsement of the importance of the Scottish museums and galleries sector. This maintained level of funding allows us and the sector to continue undertaking projects which benefit and enrich communities throughout the country."
£400,000 revenue funding is available for accredited museums and galleries, with the remaining funds ring-fenced for the Recognised Collections which are of national and international significance.
A National Strategy for Scotland's museums and galleries is due to be launched in 2012. It will be managed by a new National Development Body for Scotland's museums which will be formed by a revamped version of Museums Galleries Scotland.
