£230,000 BOOST FOR LIBRARY/ARTS PROJECTS

ACE teams up with Local Government Association
Library projects in England have been boosted by a new Arts Council England and Local Government Association fund worth £230,000.
The Libraries Development Initiative (LDI) will fund 13 projects where libraries and arts and other cultural organisations work together.
Local authorities included in the project include Cambridgeshire, Bournemouth, Derby City (in partnership with QUAD, Newcastle and Manchester in a joint project, and Portsmouth. Consortia led by London boroughs like Richmond, and Camden were also successful bidders.
Other projects which won funding are Fresh Horizons (Yorkshire), the Public Libraries Health Group, Writing West Midlands, ASCEL (Association of Senior Children’s and Education Librarians, the Publishers Association and a consortium led by The Reading Agency.
There were 19 applicants making a full submission to the fund with bids totalling £339,743.
ACE chief executive Alan Davey said: “The successful projects all show a really forward-looking approach. They’re imaginative and ambitious and will be immensely helpful in demonstrating to the wider sector the important role the public library can play in our 21st century cultural life.”
Cllr Flick Rea, chair of the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: “A library in the 21st century can be part of a cultural hub which supports everything from education and lifelong learning to health, volunteering, art projects, job hunting and social care. “

The move follows a consultation exercise which prompted almost 10,000 responses.
Councillor Deidre Brock, Culture and Leisure Convenor, said: “In Edinburgh we're extremely proud to be bucking the national trend by prioritising our libraries as a key service. “
