Mellor replaces Nairne
Simon Mellor, the general director of the Manchester International Festival, is to be Arts Council England’s executive director, arts, in succession to Andrew Nairne. Nairne left in November to become director of Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge.
Beginning in March, Mellor will take the lead on ACE’s national arts strategy and policy agendas, with interim director Barbara Matthews returning to being ACE’s director, theatre.
In 2006 Mellor left the Lyric Hammersmith, where he had been executive director since 2000 overseeing the refurbishment of the venue, to become producing director for the 2007 first biennial Manchester International Festival. He later became general director, and during his time working alongside executive director Alex Poots the festival has established a global reputation and featured work and performances from artists as diverse as Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and Chen Shi-Zheng, Bjork and Victoria Wood.
