Members raise £110,000 for urgent conservation work

The National Trust for Scotland has raised £110,000 for emergency conservation work less than four weeks into a fundraising appeal.

Hundreds of members of the NTS responded to a personal plea from managers to help the 80-year-old organisation’s finances.

Members were asked to donate at least £15 to help meet the rising cost of looking after the organisation’s 130 properties.

The NTS, which relaunched last year after a financial crisis led to redundancies, said the appeal has become the fastest-grossing in its history, with more than 3,000 donors stumping up an average of £35.

Chief executive Kate Mavor said: “This is a fantastic response and shows just how passionate Scottish people are about their heritage.

The appeal is part of a new five year strategy which will see other organisations and bodies share responsibility for the Trust’s historic attractions.

NTS is also responsible for 200,000 acres of countryside, 46 of Scotland’s Munros, seven nature reserves, 248 miles of coastline and 16 remote islands.

The trust has just over 300,000 members.

A spokeswoman for NTS said that money was still coming in for the appeal.
