Three quarters want places for young people

More design practitioners want to see apprenticeships for young people, according to new figures.

Over three quarters of design students (77%) said that a higher level apprenticeship would be a useful route into the industry, according to a survey conducted on behalf of Design Wales and Creative & Cultural Skills.

Hundreds of design practitioners, education institutions and students were asked about the idea of apprenticeships for 18 year olds and higher level entry for those aged 21 or over.

Almost half the designer respondents agreed that an apprentice aged 18+ would work well within their studios, as would a higher level apprenticeship a for apprentices aged 21+, including a continuing professional development opportunity for existing members of staff at design studios.

The survey comes at a time when expected growth in the design industry in Wales is estimated at 7% between now and 2020.

Victoria Jones of Design Wales, said, “Design Wales is supportive of the idea of design apprentices and view it as a potential additional route into the industry. The results of the Design Apprenticeships in Wales survey indicate that there is interest within the Welsh design community.”

.Catrin Cooke, Creative and Cultural Skills, added, ”As design apprenticeships are a new concept within the Welsh design community, there is further work to be done in terms of research and engagement with educators to counter any preconceived ideas.

“We are therefore looking at developing higher level apprenticeships for the creative and cultural industries as a whole as an alternative entry route into employment. Employers are saying the workforce is not adequately skilled and we are working to create interventions that ensure the design industry in Wales is strong and its workforce highly skilled.

“The design industry is the biggest employer of the creative industries in Wales with 2,561 design businesses therefore it’s important we work in partnership with the industry and educators to create solutions.”
