Wirral based artist takes away £16,500

Leo Fitzmaurice is the winner of the Northern Art Prize

Fitzmaurice landed the £16,500 first award at a prize giving ceremony in Leeds Art Gallery.

The Wirral-based artist creates new work out of old objects, and his winning entry comprised a series of 19th century landscapes hung so each of the horizons meets up to form a single line.

The judges said the artist’s work was ‘ambitious, risky and compelling '.

They added, “Drawing upon historic resources and current mobile phone technology, he provides a fresh perspective on the traditional subject of landscape, whilst at the same time pushing the boundaries of his own practice'.

The other shortlisted artists Liadin Cooke, James Hugonin and Richard Rigg each walked away with £1500.

This year's judges were Caroline Douglas (Head of Arts Council Collection); Tim Marlow (Writer, Broadcaster, Art Historian and Director of Exhibitions at White Cube); Simon Starling (Artist), Simon Wallis (Director of The Hepworth Wakefield) and Leeds Art Gallery's Curator of Exhibitions Sarah Brown.

This is the fifth Northern Art Prize, which is funded by a group of donors, including Leeds City Council, engineers Arup, design firm Logistik and Hilton Hotels, is open only to artists working in the north of England.
