Another museum chief leaves merged NMSI group
Tony Hill, director of Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry is to step down from his post.
The move follows a decision to merge with the National Museum of Science and Industry group, which includes York’s National Railway Museum and the National Media Museum in Bradford, as well as the National Science Museum in London.
The director of the National media Museum, Colin Philpot, has already announced his departure.
The merger would offer the Manchester museum a more secure future and better access to funding, said trustees after they agreed to the move.
Hill, who has been with MOSI since 2005, oversaw the £9m redevelopment of the museum which was last year named Large Visitor Attraction of the Year in the Manchester Tourism Awards.
He said: “I have loved working at MOSI with the fantastic team and ensuring that visitors enjoy their visit to one of Manchester’s greatest cultural spaces.
However, I now believe the time is right to move on. I look forward to witnessing the museum’s continued success in the future within the NMSI family of museums.”
Ian Blatchford, director of NMSI, said: “I thoroughly value the contribution which Tony has made to the success of MOSI over the past six years and wish him great success in the future. “
Asked whether Hill would be replaced, a spokesman for NMSI said the exact shape of the new senior management team at the group was still being discussed. A announcement is expected later this month.
