London to get ‘Borough of Culture’
London mayor Sadiq Khan today announced that London’s 32 boroughs will compete for £1m in arts funding and the annual title London Borough of Culture. The first will get the title in 2019.
Justine Simons, the deputy mayor for culture, said all borough were enthusiastic, and the winners will be those that can demonstrate a “step change” in their arts and culture delivery.
“I want all Londoners, rich and poor, young and old, to be able to make the most of London’s incredible cultural landscape and reap the rewards” Khan said. “This is what the London Borough of Culture is all about.”
The idea was inspired by the successful UK City of Culture designation, held this year by Hull.
