Lake District pioneering facility lost ACE grant
Ulverston’s pioneering Lanternhouse arts centre is to close on April 1, following the loss of its Arts Council grant in 2011.
The centre has been unable to find alternative funding to make up for the £280,000 grant and will lay off six members of staff, five full-time and one part time.
The organisation said it was considering future options to ensure that some community arts projects held in the centre can continue. The charity which owns the building will remain after the closure.
Lanternhouse was set up by Welfare State International, the pioneering street and outdoor performance company, as an international centre in the Lake District to research celebratory arts. It offered exhibitions, installations, workshops and seminars and accommodation for four artists, a unique reference library and archive, sound technology, digital video and multimedia facilities, studios and workspaces.
The building won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Chairman Denis McGeary said: “Lanternhouse staff have shown great resilience over the last 12 months, and continued to create a wide ranging programme of activities and events. The board of trustees now needs time to think what is best for Lanternhouse in the future.”
