£10,000 prize for commissioning new art for parish churches
The Church of England has launched a £10,000 art prize for art commissioned by parish churches.
The Church Buildings Council prize, funded by The Jerusalem Trust, will be offered to an proposal rather than a particular artwork with parishes asked to commission work using guidance on the Church’s “Commissioning New Art for Churches”.
The art to be commissioned can be a textile, metalwork, sculpture, an installation using mixed media, a painting or glass. The deadline for the first stage of the competition is 29 February with the final stage deadline on 1 October. The winner will be notified in November 2012. The Church of England hopes that the competition will encourage parishes to commission new works of art.
Anne Sloman, Chair of the Church Buildings Council, said, “The Church has always been a significant Patron of the Arts in this country and we are determined that this tradition continues into the 21st Century. We are very grateful to the Jerusalem Trust for the Prize which will encourage parishes to use the guidelines creatively to work with artists to achieve a distinctive legacy.”
Mark Cazalet, who has installed new artworks in parish churches as well as Chelmsford and Worcester cathedrals is chief editor of the guidelines He said “ the advice it contains was gathered from key figures at all levels and backgrounds in the field, representing the experience of: artists, commissioners, funders, Diocesan Advisory Committees, diocesan chancellors, clergy and parishes.”
