NEW WEST END THEATRE PLANNED

Westminster Theatre saga ends with St James
London's West End is to get a new medium scale theatre, on the site of the former Westminster Theatre in Victoria. It will open in September.
The St James Theatre will be the first newly built theatre in central London or 30 years, with a 312-seat main theatre, a studio space, brasserie and bar.
Built entirely with private funding, the theatre's artistic director will be David Gilmore, who directed the West End production of the musical Grease and before that was artistic director of the Windmill Theatre, Newbury.
It will fill a gap in central London for a mid-range purpose-built modern theatre, and is expected to have a mixture of self-produced, co-produced and received drama. It is hoped that it will be used for production orm regional theatres in an "off-Broadway" role.
The advent of the St James ends a ten year gap since the closure of the old Westminster Theatre and its subsequent destruction by fire, after which various possibilities were raised, all coming to nothing.
