Scotland challenges England in Art Fund run in
Museums in Edinburgh and Glasgow challenge seven from England for the title Art Fund Museum of the Year 2012, and the £100,000 cheque that goes with it. There are none from Wales or Northern Ireland this time
Another ten have been shortlisted for the £10,000 Clore Award for Museum Learning.
The main prize long list is:
National Museum of Scotland
National Galleries of Scotland for the Portait of a Nation exhibition
Riverside Museum, Scotland's Museum of Transport and Travel
Bletchley Park at Milton Keynes for its exhibition Life and Times of Alan Turing
M Shed, Bristol
Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter
Hepworth Wakefield
Turner Contemporary, Margate
Watts Gallery near Guildford
"The outstanding qualiity of the projects that we finally settled on,,, perfectly encapsulates the vitality and dynamism of a part of our national cultural life that continues to innovate, push boundaries and engage the public, even in these straitened times" said the chair of the judges, Lord Smith.
On the learning initiatives long list are: Camden Arts Centre, Florence Nightingale Museum; Jersey Heritage; Leicestershire County Council Heritage and Arts Service; Penlee House; Geffrey Museum; Quilt Museum; Whitworth Arty Gallery; V&A; Yorkshire Museum.
Shortlists will be announced in May with the awards being presented at the British Museum, last year's winner, on June 19.
