Sheffield to leave British Council
Graham Sheffield is to leave the British Council in June after seven years as director arts.
Sheffield, who was arts director at the Barbican between 1995 and 2010, took up his British Council post at a low point for the organisation after a dramatic switch of arts policy had brought criticism from both the arts community and government ministers.
He re-established the council’s reputation around the world, appointing a new team of arts specialists and initiating seasons of work in Brazil, China, Qatar, India, Mexico and South Africa. He also worked to raise the council’s home cultural profile with alliances with the Arts Council and other agencies.
A former BBC Radio 3 producer, he hopes to return to work more closely with music, his first love, including as chair of the charity Help Musicians UK.
