Langridge takes on Glyndebourne
Stephen Langridge, a champion of contemporary opera, is the new artistic director of the temple of traditional opera, Glyndebourne.
He takes over from Sebastian Schwartz who has resigned after only two years of post, citing too much emphasis on business strategy ion the role.
But Langridge, currently director of opera at Gothenburg Opera, is loosely associated with new movements in the art form, having worked in education and community projects with the avant garde Opera Factory, the Royal Opera, Opera North and Scottish Opera.
“Underlying all my work is the belief that opera is a natural and dynamic form of human expression, to which everybody should have access, both as a participant and audience” he said. “I am thrilled to take up this appointment as Artistic Director of Glyndebourne and join the superb team of talented and ambitious people making extraordinary and transformational opera experiences.”
In spring 2019 he will join a new team, under chief executive Gus Christie, of music director Robert Ticciati and managing director Sarah Hopwood.
