Five vie for new £125k art gallery prize

Five galleries have been shortlisted for the new £125,000 Ampersand Award to help realise development proposals.

They are the Camden Arts Centre, London; Firstsite, Colchester; the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; the MK Gallery, Milton Keynes; and the South London Gallery, Peckham. The winner will be announced in March, and the winner will get an extra £25,000 to pay for a publication related to the development. Runners up will each get £5,000.

The award is open to the 35 member institutions of Plus Tate, the network of museums and galleries across the UK which includes Tate.

Firstsite, Colchester

The award is the initiative of the Ampersand Foundation, set up by the collector and philanthropist Jack Kirkland in 2011 to support the visual arts, mostly in the UK, who will chair the judging panel.

Ikon, Birmingham

“What we want to achieve with this award” said Flor Souto, CEO of the foundation, “is to enable curators and directors working in a tough funding environment to realise a project that they have always wanted to do but have been unable to do so far due to funding pressure.”

The project may be in the form of an exhibition, a new commission or a public space, but there are no restrictions on the subject or format of the proposal except that it must be delivered by a curator, director or a team of curators working within the institution.
