Merriman to take over Horniman
Manchester Museum director Nick Merriman is to take over as chief executive of the Horniman Museum in South London next year.
Merriman, who has also been acting director of the Whitworth Gallery since the departure of his wife, Maria Balshaw, to become director of Tate earlier this year, has transformed the galleries in the University of Manchester’s museum, and doubled its visitor numbers to 450,000 since arriving in 2006.
He will succeed Janet Vitmayer, who is stepping down after 20 years, and will take over just as the Horniman prepares to open its new world gallery. Last year the Horniman recorded almost a million visitors.
Before going to Manchester Dr Merriman had been reader in museum studies at the University of London.
