George the Poet becomes ACE’s youngest member

The spoken word performer George the Poet, 26, has joined the Establishment by becoming Arts Council England’s youngest member.

George, whose real name is George Mpanga, graduated from Cambridge in political science in 2013 and since then has made a career as an artist and communicator, winning The Stake, a social enterprise competition organised by Barclays and Channel 4, and used his £16,000 prize money to create poetry workshops for underprivileged London secondary school children.

Appointed by culture secretary Karen Bradley, he joins the likes of media mogul Elisabeth Murdoch, ATG founder Rosemary Squire and the RSC’s executive director Catherine Mallyon under the chairmanship of Sir Nicholas Serota.
