Tania Wilmer moves from Circus to Umbrella
Tania Wilmer, until recently CEO of the Stratford Circus Arts Centre, is to be executive director of London’s international festival Dance Umbrella.
She will work alongside artistic director and CEO Emma Gladstone to bring choreography from around the world for London's annual October festival.
As Wilmer was leaving Stratford Circus last month, Newham Council asked the arts centre to vacate its home to make way for a new “youth zone”. “We’re dismayed at the decision to close Stratford Circus which is a nationally recognised cultural organisation with deep roots in the community” she said then.
But with Dance Umbrella she moves into an international sphere, which as well as the festival encompasses digital projects, creative learning schemes and professional development programmes.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Dance Umbrella team” she said. “I have long admired Emma’s artistic vision for the festival. Her commitment to diversity and her drive to make dance an art form that is widely experienced and enjoyed resonates deeply with my values.”
